The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) predicted that the global population will likely reach 9.8 billion people by 2050 ( SOFA, 2017: xii). In order to feed the world, food production must increase by 70% by 2050.
Such increase in production can only come from the improvements and integration of technology in the agricultural sector. IoT Precision agriculture is expected to revolutionise the agricultural sector, making it more resource-efficient and productive.
However, about 80 percent of the agriculture produce consumed by main cities come from small farmers, and most of these farmers base their decisions on experience and guesswork rather than on any scientific guidance.
This approach is not reliable in monitoring and predicting critical variables like the weather forecast, soil conditions, ambient temperature and moisture, which reflects on the crop yield, quality and therefore the returns.
IQnexus IoT Precision Agriculture is helping change the way farmers and orchardists currently work by collecting and analising data from sensors deployed in the orchard. This data is uploaded to the IQnexus platform that turns it into valuable advise for farmers and orchardists, so they can make informed decisions based on the critical information gathered and analysed by the Platform.
